One Backpack, Endless Possibilities
For thousands of children across the Sioux Empire, the start of a new school year begins with something many of us take for granted—a backpack filled with the supplies needed to learn, grow, and succeed.
More than three decades ago, Project: SOS (Supply Our Students) began with one volunteer who saw a need and decided to do something about it. Despite facing ongoing health challenges, she took on a second job to purchase school supplies for local children. That first year, nearly 60 backpacks were filled. What started as one person’s determination to help has grown into one of the region’s most recognized community programs.
Today, Project: SOS provides thousands of grade-specific backpacks and school supplies to local students each summer. The goal remains the same as it was in 1989: helping children walk into their classrooms prepared and confident on the first day of school.
A backpack may seem simple, but for many families it represents relief during a season when budgets are stretched by clothing, fees, activities, and school supply lists. For a child, it can mean starting the year feeling included, prepared, and ready to learn alongside their classmates.
Project: SOS is made possible entirely through community support. Every backpack, notebook, folder, and pencil represents neighbors helping neighbors and investing in the future of local students.
As another school year approaches, the mission remains unchanged: ensuring that every child has the opportunity to begin the year with the tools they need and the confidence they deserve. Sometimes the smallest supplies can make the biggest difference.
