Why Volunteers Are Essential
Since 1985, The Banquet has operated as a volunteer-based ministry, meaning every meal served is paid for, prepared by, and served by volunteer groups. Volunteers make it possible for The Banquet to fulfill its mission:
“We welcome the community to gather and serve each other, feeding body and spirit.”
Beyond serving meals, volunteers help with the daily operations that keep both locations running smoothly. Whether someone wants to help once a year or once a week, there’s a way to get involved.
Serve a Meal
Serving a meal is one of the most hands-on ways to support The Banquet. Volunteer groups—churches, businesses, families, civic teams, or friends—come together to purchase, prepare, and serve a meal to guests.
This experience gives volunteers a chance to directly support their neighbors and be part of the fellowship that makes The Banquet special.
Front Desk Assistance
Volunteers can help greet guests, answer basic questions, and assist with guest check-in processes depending on the meal or event. Front Desk volunteers help create a welcoming environment and support the staff with essential administrative tasks.
Special Events Support
Throughout the year, The Banquet hosts seasonal programs and special efforts, such as Project: S.O.S. and holiday-related initiatives. Volunteers help with set-up, distribution, guest flow, organizing donations, and packing supplies.
These events often serve hundreds of people in a short amount of time, and having extra helping hands makes a huge difference.
Data Entry Help
Behind every meal and program is important administrative work. Volunteers comfortable with computers can assist with data entry, record updates, tracking donations, or organizing volunteer information.
This role helps The Banquet stay organized and maintain accurate records for reporting and program planning.
Maintenance & Cleaning
Keeping both Banquet locations in good working order is an ongoing task. Volunteers can help with:
- Light cleaning
- Organizing storage areas
- Basic maintenance tasks
- Assisting with small projects or repairs
These efforts support a clean, welcoming environment for guests and volunteers.
Donate Items From the Wish List
Some volunteers support The Banquet by donating needed items rather than offering time. The organization often needs essentials like:
- Cleaning supplies
- Paper products
- Hygiene items
- Non-perishable food items
- Kitchen supplies
Donating wish-list items helps stretch resources and support daily operations. For more information on items we are needing please visit our Wish List Page.
Everyone Can Make a Difference
Whether someone wants to serve a meal, help at the front desk, or support behind the scenes, every volunteer role helps The Banquet feed, encourage, and uplift the Sioux Falls community.
With more than 16 meals served each week across two locations, volunteers make it all possible—one act of service at a time.
